The Whittier Union High School District has launched public meetings to gather community input as it begins the process of shifting from at-large elections to by-trustee area elections.
The shift means that instead of residents voting for any board candidate on the ballot living within the Whittier Union District boundaries, residents will vote for a single candidate residing in their newly drawn trustee-area, usually one-fifth of the entire district. The change will go into effect November 2020.
A public hearing will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30 in the District Board Room located at the Sierra Education Center, 9401 S. Painter Ave., Whittier, CA 90605. (The first public hearing was on Oct. 16.)
The public is invited to provide input regarding the process of establishing trustee areas, the composition of trustee areas and the criteria for trustee areas that the demographer will consider in drafting the initial maps.
