Superintendent's Message

February 2025

Dear Whittier Union High School District Community,Superintendent Dr. Monica Oviedo

Spring is nearly here, and with the changing of the seasons comes the exciting conclusion of the school year, with final projects being perfected, college admission notices eagerly awaited, and prestigious scholarships awarded. Through it all, Whittier Union students are working hard to stay on top of their academics as they prepare for end-of-year performances, final exams, and commencement activities.

The Whittier Union community received the opportunity to meet with local businesses and vendors during a “Wake Up Whittier” event held on February 19 at California High School, in coordination with the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce. The event was a rousing success, with many new relationships being forged. It is so important for the District and Whittier community to come together to share stories and ideas, continuing to make Whittier a fantastic place to live and flourish. Thank you to all the volunteers who made this event so special.

Congratulations are in order for Frontier and Sierra Vista high schools for earning six-year ACS-WASC accreditations, marking yet another milestone for the United Sierra Education Center (USEC) and Principal Margie Moriarty. Under Moriarty’s leadership, USEC has expanded its capacity to serve the District’s hard-working alternative education students with increased learning options, high academic standards, and comprehensive support.

As we head into the final months of the school year, the District is aware of the toll it can take on the health and well-being of our students, teachers, staff, and families. Since 2006, the Whittier Union Student Well-Being program has attended to the socio-emotional needs of students and provided support to all who need assistance. We encourage our students and families to bookmark our Student Well-Being web page, which has links and contact numbers for a wide variety of socio-emotional issues.

Throughout the District, you will find dedicated instructors inspired by Whittier Union’s mission “To Achieve and Maintain Excellence” brilliantly mentoring scholars who understand that the sky is the limit for their dreams of college and career. As we look forward to the end of the 2024-25 school year, let’s take a moment to thank the Whittier community for allowing us the honor to teach and educate them.

Sincerely,
Dr. Monica Oviedo
Superintendent
